Sian Ka'an Biosphere Tour
Mangrove Lagoons · Wildlife · Pristine Beaches · UNESCO World Heritage
From $390/group · UNESCO biosphere reserve
Check AvailabilitySian Ka'an is a UNESCO World Heritage biosphere reserve near Tulum — 5,280 km² of pristine Caribbean coastline. The experience combines ancient Mayan canal exploration by boat with a unique natural float through crystal-clear channels. It is part of our nature tours collection, and you can compare nature tour options if you are choosing between biosphere, reef, lagoon, and wildlife days.
The canal float happens at Muyil, the inland section of Sian Ka'an, where an archaeological site sits beside two lagoons linked by channels the Maya dug more than 1,000 years ago. They used these canals as a trade route, moving goods between the coast and inland towns. Today the same current carries you gently through the mangroves — which is why this trip is often searched for as the "Muyil tour" or "Muyil float."
The reserve entrance is just south of Tulum, making it a natural combination with the ruins for energetic travelers. From Cancun, allow a full day (pickup ~7 AM, return ~7 PM).

Floating the Ancient Muyil Canals
The highlight of the Sian Ka'an experience is the canal float — a feature unique to this reserve. The Maya carved a network of channels connecting their coastal trading settlements over 1,000 years ago. These channels still flow with crystal-clear water.
Your guide takes you by boat through the reserve to the canal system. At the entry point, you put on a life jacket and enter the water. The natural current carries you gently downstream through the Mayan channels back to the lagoon — no swimming effort needed. The water is warm, clear, and shallow enough to stand in places.
The entire float takes approximately 20–30 minutes and is suitable for all ages and swimming abilities. Life jackets are mandatory and provided.

"Wildlife Encounter We'll Never Forget"
Dolphins right off the boat, two sea turtles, and a manatee in the distance. Our guide was a marine biologist and his commentary made the whole reserve come alive. The float through the mangrove channels was surreal.

"An Antidote to the Tourist Crowd"
After a week of busy ruins and beach clubs, Sian Ka'an was exactly the reset we needed. Tiny group, untouched lagoons, and the natural Mayan canal float was the best 30 minutes of our trip. UNESCO biosphere status is well deserved.

"Long Day, 100% Worth It"
Yes, the drive from Cancun is long, but you understand why the moment you reach Muyil. We saw birds I'd never seen anywhere else. Bring binoculars and book this — it's the real Yucatan wilderness.
