If you want a trip that feels complete, plan for at least five to seven days. Three days can work, but it moves fast and you will only cover Chichen Itza, one cenote, and one island day. Ten days gives you room for Merida, Bacalar, and several cenote zones without rushing each transfer.
Cancun is usually the better first base if this is your first visit, if you are flying in and out quickly, or if you are traveling with family members who need easier logistics. Tulum works best when cenotes and boutique stays are your top priority. Playa del Carmen sits in the middle and gives balanced access in every direction.
For Chichen Itza, private usually gives better value for time. In high season the site can pass 5,000 visitors in a day, and crowd levels jump after mid-morning. A private guide can set a 7am departure, adapt pacing by group needs, and spend more time where your group is actually interested instead of following a fixed group schedule.
A strong seven-day loop is Cancun, then Isla Mujeres for days one and two, then Valladolid for an overnight stop, then Chichen Itza, then Coba plus a cenote, then Tulum ruins with beach time, then Playa del Carmen or airport return. This sequence reduces backtracking and keeps most drive legs under about three hours.
December through April is generally the best weather window, and this <Link to="/guide/best-time-to-visit-chichen-itza" className="text-primary hover:underline">best time to visit Chichen Itza</Link> guide helps with seasonal planning. Timing on the day matters just as much, so arrive before 9am when possible because the site opens at 8am and crowd pressure builds from around 10am to 2pm. March 20 to 21 draws major equinox crowds, so many travelers prefer one day before or after for a better pace.
