What Are Chichen Itza's Opening Hours?
Chichen Itza is open every day of the year from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, including weekends, Mexican public holidays, and Christmas. There are no regular closing days. The last entry is at 4:00 PM — visitors who enter before 4:00 PM may stay until 5:00 PM, but no new tickets are sold after that point.
These hours apply to the main archaeological zone. The on-site museum (Museo de las Estelas) typically keeps the same hours. The light-and-sound show (Noche de Kukulcán) runs separately in the evenings — usually starting at 7:00 PM or 8:00 PM depending on the season — and requires a separate ticket.
Best Time to Arrive at Chichen Itza
Arrive as close to 8:00 AM as possible. This is the single most impactful thing you can do to improve your visit. Here's why the difference matters so much:
8:00–9:30 AM
- •~300–500 visitors on site
- •70–75°F — comfortable walking
- •Golden light for photos
- •El Castillo almost to yourself
10:00–12:00 PM
- •Crowds building fast
- •Temperature rising to 85°F+
- •Tour buses arriving
- •Popular spots getting busy
12:00–3:00 PM
- •3,000–5,000 visitors
- •90–95°F — intense heat
- •Long queues at El Castillo
- •Hard to photograph without crowds
What Time Does It Get Crowded?
Chichen Itza receives around 2.5–3 million visitors per year — roughly 7,000–8,000 people on a busy day. The vast majority arrive between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, because that's when group tours from Cancun and Playa del Carmen tend to roll in (they depart later and stop for breakfast en route).
The two peak crowd periods are:
- 10:30 AM–1:00 PM — heaviest crowds, most tour buses arriving simultaneously
- Spring Equinox (March 20–21) — up to 10,000 visitors gather to witness the serpent shadow on El Castillo. Extraordinary to see, but requires planning months in advance
Do Tours Follow the Same Opening Hours?
Yes — all tours must enter during the 8:00 AM–4:00 PM window. The key difference is when within that window a tour arrives. Group tours departing from Cancun around 8:00–9:00 AM typically arrive at Chichen Itza at 10:00–11:00 AM after stopping for breakfast en route.
Private tours, by contrast, can depart as early as 5:30–6:00 AM and arrive right at 8:00 AM opening — giving your group the first 1–2 hours with dramatically fewer people on site. This is one of the most significant practical advantages of a private tour.

How to Buy Tickets in Advance
There is no official advance online booking system for individual Chichen Itza entry tickets — tickets are purchased on-site at the entrance booths. However, arriving early (before 9:00 AM) means minimal queue time. The lines become significant from 10:30 AM onward.
All guided tours — both group and private — include entrance arranged by the operator. You will not need to queue at the ticket booth or handle the purchase yourself. See our entrance fees guide for full 2026 ticket prices.
