Las Coloradas Pink Lake Tour from Cancun
Mexico's Famous Pink Lagoon · Rio Lagartos Flamingos · Remote Yucatan Coast
9–10 hours · Private tour · Very few operators run this route · WhatsApp for pricing
Las Coloradas is one of Mexico's most extraordinary natural sights — a lagoon so saturated with colour that the water appears bright pink, sometimes magenta, sometimes salmon, depending on the season, the light, and the concentration of organisms that produce the pigment. It is part of our nature tours in Yucatan collection.
The tour combines the pink lake with a boat ride through the Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, where your boat captain navigates mangrove channels to the flamingo colony — approximately 20,000–30,000 birds in their natural habitat.
💡 Combined with Rio Lagartos
Las Coloradas and Rio Lagartos are 15 minutes apart on the same coastal road. We combine both into one day trip so you see the pink lake AND the flamingo estuary — no extra transport cost.
The Pink Lagoon Most Cancun Visitors Never See
★ Very few tour operators run this route
We are one of very few tour operators in Cancun running private day trips to Las Coloradas. Most visitors search for this tour and find no operator. We run this route year-round.
The Vivid Pink Lagoon
Las Coloradas is a lagoon on the northern Yucatan coast famous for its extraordinarily bright pink color. The color is caused by high concentrations of red algae (Dunaliella salina), brine shrimp, and carotenoid-producing microorganisms in the highly saline water. The intensity varies by season — April through June is typically peak color. At midday, the saturation is at its maximum.
Wild Flamingo Colony
Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, just 15 minutes from Las Coloradas, hosts one of North America's largest flamingo colonies — approximately 20,000–30,000 birds year-round. The same organisms that color the lagoon pink also color the flamingos: the birds feed on carotenoid-rich brine shrimp and algae. Your boat captain navigates directly to the colony.
Remote Yucatan Coast — No Crowds
Las Coloradas sits on the remote northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, approximately 285 km from Cancun. Unlike Chichen Itza or Tulum, this area sees very few tourists. There are no souvenir stalls, no crowds, no tour buses — just the pink lake, the flamingos, and the vast coastal landscape. This is the Yucatan as most visitors never see it.
Why Is Las Coloradas Pink?
🔬 The Science
The pink color comes from a combination of Dunaliella salina algae, brine shrimp, and halophilic bacteria that thrive in the lagoon's extremely high salt concentration.
As salinity increases, these organisms produce pink and red carotenoid pigments as a natural protection against intense sunlight. The same process colors flamingo feathers pink — the birds feed on the same organisms.
