The Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is one of Mexico's most important wildlife sanctuaries — a UNESCO-recognized protected wetland on the northern Yucatan coast, spanning over 60,000 hectares of mangrove estuary, lagoons, and coastal marshes. It is home to one of the largest flamingo colonies in North America. See all nature tours in Yucatan for more wildlife experiences.

Your tour is led by a local boat captain from Rio Lagartos village who has spent years navigating every channel in the reserve. The boat brings you within 15–20 metres of thousands of wild flamingos in their natural feeding and roosting grounds — an experience that photographs alone cannot convey.

💡 Add Las Coloradas Pink Lake — 15 minutes away

Rio Lagartos and Las Coloradas are on the same northern Yucatan route. We combine both into one day trip at no extra transport cost — see the flamingo colony AND the famous pink lagoon in one day.

🦩

20,000–30,000 Wild Flamingos

Rio Lagartos hosts one of the largest flamingo colonies in North America. The birds are present year-round, with numbers peaking during breeding season (March–July). Your local boat captain knows the feeding and roosting locations throughout the estuary and navigates within 15–20 metres of the colony.

🐊

Extraordinary Biodiversity

Beyond flamingos, the Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is home to American crocodiles (common in the estuary channels), roseate spoonbills, pelicans, herons, cormorants, anhingas, and multiple raptor species. Sea turtle nesting occurs on nearby beaches from May through October. The mangrove tunnels host numerous endemic species.

🚣

Mangrove Estuary by Boat

A local boat captain — with years of experience navigating Rio Lagartos — takes your group through the mangrove channels in a small boat. The captain knows every turn, every colony location, every crocodile sunning spot. The ride lasts approximately 1.5–2 hours and is the highlight of the day.

🌿

UNESCO-Recognized Wetland

Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO-recognized protected wetland ecosystem spanning over 60,000 hectares on the northern Yucatan coast. It is one of Mexico's most important wildlife sanctuaries and a critical habitat for migratory and resident bird species.

🌸

Combine With Las Coloradas Pink Lake

Las Coloradas — Mexico's famous pink lagoon — is just 15 minutes from Rio Lagartos. We combine both into one day trip at no extra transport cost: see the flamingo colony AND the pink lake in a single unforgettable day.
